If you're a nuking FO, and playing in a team, I'd say the Merges are incredibly useful. After all, the other chars can be your meat shields, you're not supposed to be soaking damage as a FO Wink

Besides, you can always carry another shield if you're worried about being hit and killed.

Since most bosses have set damage attacks and techs which completely ignore DFP anyway, Merges are also good for bosses.
