Hehe, i've typed it out so many times, i REALLY should set this up as a guide... in the meantime read through my posts in this forum thread, replacing Broadband Adapter with Xbox360.
Basically, plug a LAN cable between the Xbox360 and PC, go to 'My Network Places', click on 'View Network Connections', click on 'Set-up a small home or office connection', and follow the on-screen instructions! Once you've set it all up, your Xbox360 should detect the connection almost immediately once it's registered that you're sharing it on your PC, and you can connect.
And as for the £20 just for the headset and mic... why not get a free subscription aswell at the sametime? lol - If my memory serves me correctly, it's about £20 for the subscription alone aswell. Value for money
And no, they don't use keyboards *sigh*
