What racing games, arcade & console, would you say were the great games prior to Gran Turismo? Pole Position and Bump N' Jump are pretty legendary.

Well, if you belive me, Square did a racing game before Final Fantasy that, i believe, was the precursor to the basic physicis engine. You'd actually skid off the road if you took a turn too fast!
Anyway, the game was called Rad Racer, but I can't seem to find a screen shot of it. NVNC ID VIDES, NVNC NE VIDES
Now you see it, now you don't

The game Road Blasters showed how powerful the 1989 Atari Lynx handheld was, not far off the graphics of the NES screenshot below.

Wow 8bit, you really know your old style games!
My favourite was this really lame amiga game that basically involved little race cars going around a circuit and you could just drive like a maniac and smash into them, just for fun. Don't even think of asking me for a name on that one though, really testing my memory now! :S

The car racing genre was probably popular early on with programers because it was easy to make the simple shape of a car go around a top down viewed track, lol.
I liked the buggies in Rock N' Roll Racing for Genesis & SNES. Rock N' Roll Racing |
