Watching English-subtitled anime made me pay more attention to the Japanese language. I've learned a few really really simple Japanese words, e.g. "hai" (=yes), and when I hear a group of people speak a foreign language, I'll recognise if it's Japanese.

Believe this or not, your choice. I was watching so many episodes of random animes in Japanese, that I was intrigued to learn Japanese just to understand what they are saying. Sadly in my second year of Japanese. I can only understand minimal set phrases.. But I will say that I didn't know boku was only used by teenage boys.. anyone else using it would be strange.. *boku means I* everyone else says watashi.

note: I used some japanese text, set encoding to Japanese (Windows) to display properly.
"boku" [ボク, 僕] is an informal word, used by (yes, you're right) boys. but it can also be used by 'tomboys' despite the fact that they're girls. "watashi" [わたし, 私] (or "watakushi" [わたくし, 私]) is the formal version of the word 'I' (and it's forms), it can be used by anybody regardless of gender and age. There are so many ways of saying 'I', those two aren't the only words (most of them are slang, informal, or dependent on the dialect). a commonly heard term is "ore" [オレ, 俺] used by tough-guys in anime; conversely, a lot of girls in anime/j-drama, etc. use "atashi" [あたし].
I think I'm just confusing people... :O
Point is, some people learn quite a bit through anime and manga. I know I did, I learned a lot more through anime (and jpop too) than I did in Japanese Class.

Did you take Japanese in high school? I'm in second year, but yeah.. She seems to be teaching us at a slower rate.. Because we are trying to learn kanji as well as all the vocab and forms *past, present, future* that kind of thing. I will say that I did leanr some from anime, but now taking 2 years, it's fun to just have it on in the background and see how much I can translate.. although, it only works if I haven't already memorized the whole episode.

pfft. I've given up trying to learn Japanese for the time being. From the little I know, there are far too many ways to say the simple things like I for example. And then you've got the honourific-informal ways of saying everything.
Although I like the idea of the verb endings. arimasu, arimasen. masu at the end usually means yes/to do, masen means to not do/no. Right? (people who know more than me (not hard))
And you've only learnt that now sd28? Boy I hope you didn't annoy a girl before you learnt that or that's a rude awakening for you . Try getting on the wrong side of Ria. You'll get loads of >=O in MSN

decswxaqz: yeah, you're right. that's generally how it works.
IvIelacia: I did take it in high school (I graduated last year). I should be more clear on this. I learned a little from anime, a little from school, but mostly from translating (I didn't mention that in the other post). I've been a manga translator for about 16 months for Inane, and like 6 or 7 for Jankenpon. I tried translating anime about a month before I joined Inane, it was not easy despite the series was kinda easy (E's Otherwise final ep...I didn't even see the first 25 eps >.>). Even though I've gotten pretty good at translating manga (if I 'speed translate' I can get a 36-42 page chapter done in an hour or so with no interruptions or distractions, though the quality drops slightly), I doubt I can translate anime, they're totally different.
