But you could argue that Link didn't really belong in SC2 as the weapons he had, like bombs, didn't fit into the beat-em-up catagory, and should've remained in SSBM.
Link would make a decent Humar as he concentrates on sword work more, though he could possible be a Fonewm too, as he does use magic, perhaps he could be the 13th class, the only problem here is, you wouldn't be able to edit his character skin and still keep it recognisable as Link, best you'd be able to do is have a young and adult Link with 4 costumes, that'd only give you 8 variables.
Its not the category of games, its when they're set! If you wanted to, Captain Falcon would be better suited to PSU... then again, thats maybe a bit too futuristic!
Tales of Symphonia characters would be suited to play in Soul Caliber because of the time they're set in, or possibly Capcoms Street Fighter characters, where as they clearly wouldn't work in a futuristic game like PSU. Same type of game, but way ahead of the time the story is set in!
SF was always about pure fighthing, so that wouldn't work, also, Falcon isn't much with swords, Link used short and long range weapons, as well as magic.
Perhaps the characters from Lost Kingdoms, prob with Tales Of Symphonia, it's too FF like.
ONE PROBLEM SCOTT, youd enter a lobby online and there would be hundreds of links waiting for you. This would cause a massive problem, especially if they were all called link to! Hmm, maybe an NPC link featuring in a quest? As for class, i think his slingshot, hookshot, longshot, boomerang, fairy bow, bombs and bombuscha (think thats how you spell it) are enough to class him as a ranger! No, i dont think hed be terribly suited to PSU, but then again, that NiGHTS guy featured in Ep. 1&2.

You don't know that for a fact, and just because you ddon't want something or do want it, doesn't mean it'll work that way, the world doesn't revolve around you.
